Finding Perfect Fits for Key Staff Openings

It can be challenging to fill big shoes when replacing a key staff member. Where do you start? What qualities does the person need to possess? Who should lead the search process? How can you make the process as seamless as possible and not disrupt the current mission? These questions and more were some of the questions posed when The HealthCare Connection began its executive search last year to replace its visionary leader, Dolores Lindsay, who founded and led the organization for over 50 years.

The HealthCare Connection is a nationally and regionally recognized leader in providing quality, culturally sensitive and accessible health, dental care and behavioral health services in northern Hamilton County and surrounding areas. Its impact in the region is broad-reaching and when succession planning was needed to fill Lindsay’s CEO spot, the HealthCare Connection board contacted OneSource Center consulting.

James Cowan, Chair Elect of HealthCare Connection’s Board, said it is difficult to describe the depth of collaboration that OneSource Center provided to the board through their executive search – from establishing a framework for the process, to guiding sensitive discussions but never dictating direction, to providing additional coaching if needed. According to Cowan, the OneSource Center team was patient and adaptive, and the board was thrilled with the process – finding the perfect fit in Dr. Jolene Joseph, the organization’s new CEO.

The HealthCare Connection has worked with OneSource Center on many needs throughout the years – from obtaining office and waiting room furniture to staff training experiences and through the use of OneSource Center’s coaching and consulting services. The relationship has become a true partnership and Cowan thanks OneSource Center for its ongoing guidance and support.

“OneSource Center continues to be an important resource in our community,” said Cowan. “They help nonprofits with their important role in serving community need, and we are appreciative of our partnership!”

Supporting Nonprofit DEI Leadership Growth — Sellers Awarded OneSource Center Emerging Leader Award

Racial inequality extends to all facets of life, and the nonprofit sector is no exception.  OneSource Center for Nonprofit Excellence recognizes the under-representation of people of color in Tri-State nonprofit leadership circles, and supports initiatives that both address this situation and strengthen the management skills of future changemakers.

In response to this belief in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and the importance of DEI representation in upper management, OneSource Center recently initiated its Emerging Leader Scholarship which provides attendance at the NLIGC’s highly lauded year-long nonprofit leadership development program, EXCEL.  The in-depth program trains leaders in all aspects of nonprofit management and governance, and sets attendees on a path to leadership growth and success.

Rashidah Sellers, Director of Residential Services/Treatment Programs at Lighthouse Youth and Family Services, is the 2021 OneSource Center Emerging Leader Award recipient.  A 15-year employee of the organization, Sellers leads a team working with youth with serious emotional and behavioral problems.  Sellers is known for developing staff through personal mentorship and supporting their educational growth.  Recently promoted to her director role, she is responsible for overseeing two of Lighthouse Youth Service’s residential care facilities and its staff of 40-50 individuals.

“OneSource Center is committed to removing DEI barriers in the nonprofit community, and is encouraged by the ripple-effect impact the NLIGC Leadership Development program will have on Rashidah and on the community with which her team interacts,” said Christie Brown, CEO, OneSource Center.

NLIGC (Nonprofit Leadership Institute of Greater Cincinnati) is a joint venture of OneSource Center and Talbert House and is designed to strengthen the leadership skills of nonprofit leaders in our community.
