Disability Language Style Guide

As language, perceptions and social mores change rapidly, it is becoming increasingly difficult for journalists and other communicators to figure out how to refer to people with disabilities. Even the term “disability” is not universally accepted.

This style guide, which covers dozens of words and terms commonly used when referring to disability, can help. The guide was developed by the National Center on Disability and Journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and was last updated in the summer of 2021.

At OneSource Center we are committed to ADEI (access, diversity, equity and inclusion) and wanted to share this useful guide with all of you as well! Together, we build a thriving community for all. View the entire style guide on the NCDJ website

Charitable Solicitation Registration Requirement for Nonprofits

Did you know that nonprofits are required to register in states where they solicit donations?

In Kentucky, registration is due annually by 4 months and 15 days after the organization’s fiscal year ends. Learn more.

In Ohio, annual reports are due on the 15th day of the fifth month following the end of the organization’s fiscal year. Learn more. To file in Ohio, visit Attorney General’s online registration.

Caution! Employee Retention Credit — Know Your Facts

Many nonprofits are being solicited by groups offering to file for the Earned Income Credit (ERC), charging a fee of just 10% for their assistance. While some of these companies may be reputable, you must be cautious as we have learned that some will incorrectly file for the maximum credit.

The problem shows up later if the agency learns they did not qualify for all or most of the credit. The inflated 10% fee has already been paid and the group that processed the application is no longer. So the advice is to be sure to go with a reputable, known local firm, many that also charge just 10% but collect AFTER you get the credit approved.
